Writing Center Research Study Internship

This 3-credit course is open to all students interested in learning how to craft a social science research project from start to finish. Reading, writing, and hands-on experience are central to this project. In partnership with faculty, it will culminate in both a collaborative report and presentation of findings, as well as a preliminary written and oral history of the center to be featured on our website.
This course is designed to fulfill two primary objectives:
- To introduce students to the field of writing center research, the principles of research design, interdisciplinary mixed methods, field work, collection of data, analysis of primary and secondary sources, and summative evaluation.
- To conduct a small-scale study on tutor and tutee experience at the Rutgers Writing Centers, as well as explore the history of the centers, using quantitative and qualitative methods, including surveys, oral history interviews, focus groups, and participant observation.
Requirements
This internship meets in-person once a week for 80 minutes. The second 80 minute “class period” will be committed to individual and group field work in asynchronous modality. Students are expected to complete all readings and assignments for class, as well as field work, including maintaining a field note journal.

Writing Theory & Tutoring Internship
(355:395:004) Thursdays, 12:10-1:30pm, DWC-105 (C/D) - *plus one unpaid 80-minute tutoring session per week

In this three-credit, graded internship, Rutgers Writing Center interns receive intensive hands-on experience and education in the art of teaching and tutoring writing. Students immerse themselves in the world of Writing Center life, a world that situates writing and linguistic justice at the heart of scholarship, relationship, and social change. Working with undergraduate writers in a weekly practicum session, intern tutors develop professional communication skills, patience, and flexibility. In weekly class meetings, interns receive practical tutor training, compose original essays on composition and tutoring theory, collaborate on group presentations, and process internship experiences through formal and informal reflection.
In addition to the challenging, but gratifying, experience of peer tutoring at the collegiate level, this internship is a chance to grow as a writer, student, and professional. Interns will consider new perspectives, hone revision skills, create connections, bolster pedagogical philosophy, and develop professionalism. Our Centers do more than tutor students; we offer workshops, produce a blog, and are committed to shared leadership among all members of our community. As such, tutors are encouraged to participate fully in Writing Center activities, and have the opportunity to create exciting new initiatives in collaboration with their colleagues.
Requirements
The class meets once a week for 80 minutes. In addition, interns will tutor one unpaid 80-minutes session per week, for ten weeks. These sessions are scheduled according to the interns' availability. After the first several weeks of class, and with the permission of the instructor, you will be eligible to tutor for pay.

*Note: Rutgers Writing Centers Internships can be used to fulfill elective college credit toward graduation. Students majoring or minoring in English may apply internship credits towards the completion of their elective major or minor requirements.
